What size winch do I need

I have a 24ft crusiers Inc. weighs about 5,000lbs I have a winch on there now that is a steel cabel type forgot the diameter from harbor freight it always binds in the spool want to change it can I go with a standard cord type? and how much weight should I buy.

Well I will answear my own question since knowone else will.. after research I will go with at least a 2500lb winch, the ratio is about 50% of your boat weight and go with a strap instead less dangerous.

There's a power wench called power wench .They sell them at West marine. They pull up to 10,000 depending on the size of the unit. The ones at habor House are Junk.I used a power wench for years .In fact I still have the old one. It still works too.I paid about $350.00 for it. It's in a yellow case. Some are in a white case.The cable is 25 ft long.

Thanks for the replies, end up buying a 2,600lb unit 2 speed type for about 140 bucks wish I would of read the last post yesterday that post above is a great price from Iboats.
