I have a 28ft bayliner contessa, my question is: What size outboard should I use as a kicker? just big enough to get me to shore in case of breakdown? I river cruise on the Columbia in the pacific northwest

Out in the open water I'd want more, but just to get you to shore on a river ... a 9.9 would do.

Re: what size

For use on the Columbia River, well, I'd go for big, maybe 20-25. Best to talk to someone local on the subject, see what others in the area are doing. Chief ;)

Re: what size

9.9s and 15s work ok, get a high thrust model, or at least a high thrust prop. Bigger is better, but the jump in $$, size and weight when you go over 15hp makes it impractical.
