Gear ratio makes a huge difference. Stay close to wutcha got. You'll probably only find Alpha units and they will fit fine. Nobody refurbishes the pre-Alphas anymore. The main thing to watch out for is the input shaft length. Newer ones are longer. That's the only real sticking point, except you have to have appropriate uppers matched with appropriate lowers. You can get uppers, lowers, and complete drives from iboats. Or you can try googling Sterndrive Engineering for an economy alternative.
