i'm confused by what sticks to the differant types of resins (epoxy & polyester). and what sticks to each of them. i read about how much better epoxy resin is for waterproofing plywood but i don't want to use it if paint won't stick to it. and will epoxy or resin stick better to a thin spot on the keel of a fibergalss boat? will adhesive's like 3M 5200 & 4200 stick to both?
and before someone else say's it i know this is a "Sticky Question"

As a rule all resins stick to one another. However, the base resin must be cured dry, sanded and wiped with acetone to remove any glaze or wax. Remember epoxy is stronger and sticker than poly resin. it also cost more and takes longer to cure.

I use poly resin when repairing large areas such as floors and stringers. I use epoxy resin for holes in the hull or places that extra bonding or strength are needed. I would likely use marinetex for your keel issue. It is a epoxy putty and is very durable and sticks where you put it.

just to be clear, most luxury yachts (Poly and vinylester Resin construction) are painted for that high gloss shine. Epoxy may also be painted with similar results provided the job is prepped well and the correct primer is used.

The only thing you need to know, or worry about is Polyester bonding to Epoxy, it doesn't do it well, all other combinations work OK.

All surfaces do need to be prepped correctly though, so read the directions for each product.
