Re: What style battery will I need?
there are a gazillion places selling batteries but only three or four that actually make them. That battery on the wal-mart shelf for $45 is the same one they sell down at Joes garage for $90 and the same one in auto-house parts that is regularly $140 but almost always on sale for $70.
So just go to walmart. Pick up their cheapest marine deep cycle to see if it weighs too much for you tastes. If not, then buy it and go boating. It will start your engine and if you ever use a trolling motor, radio, depth finder, etc then it will do that too.
Your lawnmower battery will work but - it won't last very long and if you use a trolling motor then it won't last long at all. Maybe 2 years? Probably less with trolling motor. A deep cycle carried back into garage and kept dry will last 7-8 years and do a lot better job at always having enough juice to start your motor.
BTW - I use the $45 wal mart deep cycle in my truck. I forget to turn lights off at least twice a year. My starting batteries were almost always ruined if they ever went completely dead. My walmart marine has come back from the dead four times already.
