I was just looking on Ebay at some tachometers. Didn't know there were so many different kinds and styles!?! I have a 1974 70hp Johnson. What should I be looking for? My motor is also a 3 cylinder. So many numbers on the back of the tach's, which ones should I be looking for, and some come without instructions. What wires would I hook up to on the motor? TIA Dan

Re: What tachometer should I get...?

You will need one that can be set for "6" pole setting on the back of the tach. Teleflex makes a bunch of them, to mention one. They have them here on iboats for sale or keep checking E-bay. You will want to hook it up to the gray wire. Let us know when you het it and we can walk you through it. Meanwhile, check this page out for installation and settings. It's a PDF file(Adobe).

web page Look at "Other Outboards w/Alternator" under Outboard Tachometers.

rickdb1boat --Thanks for the info...I was reading through my manual, and, it does have a section on how to hook up a tach. Should have done that in the first place!?! Anyway, I'm still bidding on a tach, and if I need help wiring it up, I know the place to come!! Thanks again....Dan

Re: What tachometer should I get...?

I have a simliar motor, 1978 Johnson 70, and have been browsing tachs. I found a Larson that would fit in with my speedo and am wondering if I would need any kind of senders or wiring harnesses to install it? My boat does not have one now. The motor does have an alternator. I don't have a manual for this motor yet to reference. Thanks.......

Re: What tachometer should I get...?

benyshep

If you read the info on the link given above, it should answer your questions about hook-up. Generally, you will have a gray wire that goes to the send terminal on the tach. and a ground wire to the ground terminal on the Tach. That's really about it. Hook up a switched power lead to the light terminal, if desired. The gray wire is the pulse wire coming from the control box or at the motor terminal strip. You may or may not already have the gray wire under your dash already. Check it out..
