My tach went the last time I was out (not sure if that was from some other problem) I'm not sure what tacho would work with my motor. Mercury 1990 V-200. Not sure if a 4-6-12 pole would work, or if a 4-cycle gas type would work, maybe none of those. What im thinking is its a 3 pulse 6 pole, but really dont know.

Mercs are usually 12P. That is the same as 6c. Any marine OB tach will likely work. Look for your application listed on the brochure.

What would happen if I used the wrong type, would it just not work or give the wrong reading?

If you used the wrong setting on the correct OB Tach, you would have a bad reading, high or low. If you used an automotive type tach, I am not sure what reading (if any) you would have. I would guess it depended on what type of tach it was.

Break out the oscilloscope, and lets check the signal!

Re: What Tachometer should I use?

Thx Carholme and Chris. The Tach was set at 4 from a range of 1-4 it was reading 4400 rpm's at wot before it died. Now in not sure if its my prop or the tach was set to high. From my memory of something I read the tach should of been set at 3. If anyone knows what I should set it at that would be really helpful. The s/n on my motor comes up as a trolling motor. but I have the range 5624878 THRU 0C100860 its the V-200 Dual carb 2.4L 1990 mercury.

What p/n and make is the original tach?

Why not just post the engine s/n? You say you have a range of 5624878 THRU 0C100860 but OC100860 comes up as:

200 V-200 V6 0B241881 0C100860 1988 USA not 1990.

My serial # comes up as a 10hp trolling motor really no need to list it (I dont know why). The 1988 model I think is the same as the 1990 just sold at a different year. If anyone knows what I should set the tach to for the 1988 I think that would work. Im pretty sure its 3 but the one that was on it was set to 4. =] Thx for any help
