BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (CNN) -- Three Birmingham college students were arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with a string of Alabama church fires that is described in court papers as a joke that "got out of hand," authorities said.

Is "a joke that 'got out of hand'" really "terrorism"? I'm not sure...

Terrorism - The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons. <br /><br /><br />Were they doing as described in the definition...hmmm, I don't know. Were the victims feeling what is described in the definition. I bet they were. I believe it is out of the perps hands. They don't get to decide if it was terrorism. That decision is made by the victims.

We generally think of terrorists in terms of motives, or political goals of some sort, however illogical they may be. <br />Tim McVeigh was a terrorist.<br /><br />These kids are just plain stupid.<br /><br />To my knowledge, no one was physically injured in these fires.<br /><br />I don't think they will officially be classed as hate crimes either, as that requires some brain power, however misguided, to be classed as hate.<br /><br />But these kids need to be put away for a long long time, if for no other reason than if they are stupid enough to do this, what else are they capable of doing to some other unsuspecting victim out there?

I hate to be smug (or to the point, or neo -conservative, etc.) but arson is , for good reason, a serious offence. And they should be tried as adults.

Re-arranging a Nativity scene to where the Wise Men are doing stuff to the donkeys, that's a joke. Not burning churches!

Not terrorists?<br />In my opinion any act of arson against any house of prayer no matter what denomination is trying to terrorize the faithful.<br />Example:if it would have been 3 synagoques it would have been a blatant act of anti-semitism.<br />Hate messages are always spread through hoodlums.In this case 3 bullies who thought it was fun to burn down somebody's church.This was an act of terrorism against church going people.

Here in NY which is the liberal mecca of the US arson is one crime that you can use DEADLY force to prevent. I think that pretty much speaks for itself on how serious it is. It is for the grace of God (no pun intended) that no-one was killed or injured. I vote for the send them to Iraq idea.

As for sending them to Iraq.Are arsonists supposed to be part of the troops that bring democracy to the suppressed and am I supposed to support them??<br />An army made up of volunteers is a much higher standard than that.As it should be!

Just what our military needs, a group of jackarses that can't follow one simple direction.....don't break the law.<br />By the way, the idea that they were terrorists, is another attempt by some to take our focus off of real terrorists threats to Americans. These law-breakers did not hate Americans, they did not want to put an end to our way of life, nor did they plan to cause mass injury and death to our citizens. Idiots....yes, law-breakers......yes....terrorists....NO. Anyone trying to paint these blond-hair blue eyed boys as terrorists, are simply trying to justify your grandmother getting searched at an airport, rather than what we all know terrorists to look like.
