I have had the worst luck with Maxtor Hard drives over the last three years. Durring that time period, I have had three Maxtor hard drives fail about a year apart, just past the warrantee oeriod.

Is there something with my computer thats killing them?

This is really getting old reloading everything every year!

I have had much the same problem with maxtor and with seagate, western digital seams to work better for me. fuji and fujitsu are even worse, IMHO. How long per day is it powered up? Maybe go scsi, higher speed, more reliable.

LD....

Do you power down/up every day?

Is your power saver set to turn off the HD after so many minutes?

In my opinion, it's better to get em running and leave em running than up down up down all the time.

Now, that's only if you have CLEAN REALIABLE power. Do you brownouts or quick power flucuations quite often?

And on the other hand, maybe they just make junk now :)

According to one of my cone head friends, Maxtor had a problem with a batch of "capacitors" used on the controler board.

Can't remember when it started and don't know when it will end production using these parts but maxtor had a bunch of hard drives bundled with the windows op system for cheap and he bought up a bunch of them - turfed the hard drives and used the op systems for computers he was building to sell.

Have had good luck with the two WD drives I've bought and the maxtor in the portable USB drive I bought 4 years ago had been pooched for 3 years.

JD

The WD drives with the 3 year warranty have been excellent. Very quiet too.
I really can't I'm saying that, having lived through the 640/720/1.2/2.1/3.2GB WD ones. They must have been some of the worst made.

Before I retired, we used to get drives in and the spec. sheet listed the MTBF something like 100,000 hrs. but the warranty was like 12 months. Go figure.

I have had good service with the WDs. I have a two drive system and use the second only for backup with a software product called True Image by Acronis. It backs up everything including Windows and all hidden files. If I have a hard disk crash of the master all I have to do is replace it and recover from the back up drive. No more rebuilding from scratch. Norton has a product called Ghost but True Image seems much easier.

I was told it was a bad idea to power up and down your computer, just leave it on, especially with the auto-sleep mode they have now. It's a softer start than a hard boot.

That was back when hardware wasn't as good of quality as it is now.
