after pulling my drive i found in the exhaust these stuck behind the shaft that shifts the drive into fwd or rev. they are metal flaps with rubber around the edges.

Im assuming that these are Exhaust flappers....

How bad is it that they are no longer in the appropriate position that they should be in...

The new ones are a lot different looking, They have been upgraded and don't have the shaft thru the Y pipe any more. They also work better.

Re: what the heck are these??

after looking there is only one shutter correct? and it consists of 2 flappers. which fell off in my case.

it is where both risers dump into one tube behind the motor?????

This seems like a very complex job...

Pull the risers, the flappers are in the top of the Y pipe. One on each side.
You may have pieces there from each side, or both from one side. Impossible to say.

PS: No, it is not a 5 minute job. Requiers new OEM gaskets and clean gasket surfaces and new shutters to put it back together.

Hmmm I've had my engine out and Y-pipe removed at some point and I never saw flappers like that... could mine be missing as well?

They are probably at the bottom of the Y pipe, not the tops.

okay, so it looks like i pull risers and remove rubber exhaust boot then there will be a flapper at the top of the metal Y pipe. one on each side... correct?.

when i unscrew the screws holding parts of the carbs linkinge to the riser wiill i have to re adjuct anyhting when i put it back on...? or just bolt off then bolt back on..

Re: what the heck are these??

FYI.............I was able to replace mine without removing the risers........as long as you can remove the ruber boots........

By taking the risers off, you have a chance to inspect the gasket surfaces, and the outlets of the risers to make sure they are still ok. They do go bad you know, and when it happens, it usually destroys the engine.
