What the heck happened??????

I know this is the wrong forum for this, but maybe someone has seen this? ran my 1957 5.5 in a barrel today....gas from last fall. motor ran like a top. i let it run for 30 mins or so, no running issues. drained the drum, hosed the "barrel run" oil off the leg and lu......now the paint from the water line down ( original paint), is a much different colour than the paint above the waterline!!! not just a small difference.......it looks like its been etched??? cant post pics tonight....but wow, what could have caused this?

Exhaust gases contain a number of chemicals that are poisonous and harmful. Most likely you have witnessed the effects of sulfuric acid or some other hazardous compound produced by the burning of two stroke oil and gas (and most likely magnified by being old) and running the engine in a barrel for an extended time. That is just a guess by the way.

this motor isnt new to me, and has spent its share of time in my test barrel, and on the water in the last few years without any sign of this? the colour change from above the water line to below is ...."wow"!

Maybe it was something in the barrel that caused the change.

......same barrel forever....and i actually pressure washed it out before filling ? im perplexed! will post pics tomorrow.

I looks like the surface of the paint got oxidized somehow. Don't know why. Have you tried to buff it some to see if the original color is underneath?

i tried a scotchbrite pad and a bit of water.....a fair bit of color came off on the pad, and it looked ok until the water dried, then right back to the dull finish.

water is straight from a drilled well to the tap, no chlorination, no chemical addition of any kind....drink it everyday!!!

nope.....bought a gallon of the red omc oil two summers ago.....still running it.
guess im going to have to dispose of that 2 gallons of fuel, and try another motor. :faint2:

Where did you get the pressure washer & what was the last soap / substance ran thru the soap pick-up of the pressure washer? maybe something was still left in the pressure pump. If it were me I would be looking in my next glass of water real good. let us know when you find the cause.

Did the water get really hot? stabil in gas?

water would not have gotten above 70. no stabil, and cant remember if i put a bit of seafoam in that fuel last fall.

pressure washer is mine, and hasnt had any soap or other anything ran through the pick up tube for many years, but has been used frequently since car wash soap was used. water still tastes and looks great!

ok....ran the motor in the pics again today with fresh gas, was worried that what ever happened to the paint could be happening internally. gave it a half hour idle in the barrel. didnt run any differently on fresh fuel as compared to the 8 month old fuel. then i ran another motor ( first motor is a 1957, second is a 1958) . gave that one the same half hour run and hose down.....no sign of the paint being etched.
guess i have to conclude that, for whatever reason, the old fuel was the culprit. ( i knew the abandoned nuclear power plant next door wasnt having an effect on my well water!!! ,my six legged dog ( speedy) plays over there all the time!! )

Try cleaning it off with white vinegar.
