I accidentally broke the tip off a spark plug durring routine check and found the core of the plug was corroded through the length of the pin. How is this allowed to happen? No cracks were found in ceramic.

It shouldn't have corroded at all, but when was the last time they were changed? Unfortunately salt water seems to have a way of working it's way into just about everything over time. Were the rubber boots on the plug wires tight on the plug?

I switched to NGK 10 years ago when I was having fowling problems with champ, the problem stopped. My 2 stroke dirt bikes never had a problem so I changed.

Can you get any pics of the corrosion? Don't take this the wrong way but are you sure it's corrosion and not just a line of "copper" running from the top to bottom? It's hard to imagine they would just corrode out after only 10 hours. Then again very few things are made the way they used to be.

pic is failing to load for some reason but yes the entire conductor rod was corroded almost all the way to center core. Had just a little bit left at dead center. Like it was a sacrificial part or something! Glad it dint sacrifice while I was offshore!

That's a shame. Well I guess that leaves you with NGK or BOSCH. Glad you didn't get stranded offshore too.

As Tazrig said, it could be just a line of copper running through the plug. Google Champion and see what they have to say. Or else break a new plug and see what it looks like.

If you sent Champion that pic it would be interesting to hear what they have to say.

I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for myself. I've never seen internal corrosion like that in a plug before.

If thast's a 10-hour plug, you should probably be more interested in finding why it's corroded that badly. You have moisture instrusion ...

QL77 is a resistor plug. The black slug is the resistor and it is not mechanically connected at either end. It just sits in the cavity and may or may not press against both contacts inside of the plug. (I never broke one apart to see) Even with the visible damage, which may or may not be corrosion, you were in no danger of losing spark.
