What the heck is this noise?

I have a 100hp johnson 1987 engine. It works great except that now everytime I start it, it makes a loud "urrrrrrrr" noise, like if it had a bad bearing or something. Sounds like something is grinding or out of lubrication. I thought it was the starter but its practicaly new"rebuilt"<br /><br />Any suggestions.

sounds like a bendix wobble on the starter shaft...try a drop or 2 of a light oil on the shaft on the top side of the bendix.

Is gear oil OK to use?

That's a little heavy....something like WD-40....just a quick shot-not TOO much...<br />Gear oil would collect dirt too easily, and the viscosity is high enough it may restrict movement alone.

And Walleyehed comes through again!!! <br /><br />Might want to put a drop of light oil on it eventually, as WD-40 is more of a solvent and probably wont last long!

I know the invite want for me, But other than a little salmon fishing in the ocean, Ive never really fished offshore. Man how I would love to do it!

Well it did not last to long. Could there be something wrong with the starter or should I just lube-it every day I use the boat.<br />Thanks anyways to all.

may be the brushes in the startermoter are worn and need to be replaced.<br />its not hard to do just a pain in the b..<br />wich will cost 20 bucks??<br />ore a new starter will go for 175 dollars<br />bud i'm not a wrench so ask them.<br /><br />good luck

Try with thin oil instead of WD 40. You can get the bendix drive seperate, if the bushing is worn, only it can be hard to get the little nut off. Now that you know what the noise is, you could turn the radio up when you start it

Some advice, and take it how you want.....In the future, buy "REMANUFACTURED", not "REBUILT"....they are NOT the same....
