What the....roof tar?

My buddy just got a old 14' aluminum V-hull for free and some yahoo used roofing tar to water proof the outside seams:(. Is there an easy way to get this off. I was thinking of a paint stripper heat gun set on low just enough to soften it up and scrape it off and then wirewheel the snot out of it to get whatever is left. I suggested either Gluvit (knowledge props to all of you at iboats forums) or 3M 5200 to put back on the seams to seal her back up.
Please advise...

Maybe paint thinner would help - not really sure - but this had me laughing and thinking "I am glad I don't have that one to fix" Good luck

Seriously, denatured alcohol would be my choice. If it doesnt work I dont know what will. Maybe oven cleaner? Or a commercial type of degreaser?

I'm sorry, I have to quit laughing first. I would try aircraft stripper. If that didn't work I would pick out shingles that would go with the rest of the boat color scheme:D.....OH, but don't nail them on.

Actually you want to attatch your shingles with Closed end rivets and 3M 5200 :D:D:D. I am thinking aircraft stripper as well . I think the heat gun will just make an even bigger mess ( at least its a small boat ).

I'd probably not do the wire wheel thing... probably just get gooped up... Also, it's easy to make lots of scour marks with wire wheel. There is some stuff for automotive use that is literally labelled "tar remover"... If you can find it, you might read the label and see what it's composed of... or buy it in the small cans.... Call an automotive paint supply shop and ask if they have it.

I would heat it and scrape it, then use some bug and tar remove to get rid fo the rest.

Did your bud pick this boat across the border in "TAR NATION?"

You could sell it to a college team..Maybe the TARHEELS would buy it?

If none of the above..Aircraft stripper

Re: What the....roof tar?

you guys arent thinking properly.

the hull is aluminum and at least 16 gauge aluminum at that.

plenty strong.

go to harbor freight and buy a $80 sandblaster.

then go to lowes and buy a piece of 2x4, some screen door mesh, and a few bags of $8 play sand, and a 5 gallon bucket.

build box out of 2x4 and staple mesh to top to make filter. then place over bucket and filter play sand through that. fill the sandblaster and set psi to 100psi. you now have 300grit sand.

blast that crap off the body and drink beers when the pressure dips and you have to let it build. put a tarp down and reclaim/filter sand used. you now have a sandblaster and a quick way to strip all kinds of material with 300grit renewable sand.

just got done stripping/repainting a yamaha 200hp outboard yesterday using play sand. him so pretty now...well except the line pressure was high so we have orange peel haha. hell, I'll go take some pics real quick.

the initial price and quick timeline more than make up the initial cost.

done.

Re: What the....roof tar?

I'm going to recommend that he try the bug and tar remover first and then try and LIGHTLY scrape the rest of it off with a fine wire brush. It really isn't that bad. The guy who tared it actually did it pretty cleanly. I have to laugh at the roofing comments. I told my buddy that if the tar doesn't come off not to worry....I have some copper roof flashing that we could put over it to seal it up and then he could up the resale if he did copper gutters and downspouts.

Paint thinner would be my choice.

I used to have a Coleman Crawdad nicknamed "Tar Baby" because roofing tar is the only thing that would stick to, and seal up the rub-thru holes in the plastic hull. When the tar patches (roofing membrane) would rub through, I'd clean off the tar with paint thinner and slap on a few more patches.

My buddy got the boat and I told him about the roofing membrane and how to patch the leaks if he were to get any... Soooo,,, he completely covered the entire inside hull of the boat with roofing membrane, probably added 100# to that small boat. I re-nicknamed it "Tar Mama"

The only other option I could think of would be to steam it off, but you'd have to get ahold of commercial equipment.

i roofed for five years, and when i had to clean my hands, i used wd-40. Works like a charm. might be the more expensive route.
