The '77 motor uses the older clip-on cables. The motor ends look like this:

Text snipped from the BRP parts list. USE THROTTLE AND SHIFT CABLES (377365 5 FT) THRU (379850 50 FT).

Oh, and have you done a compression test on your new motor? Water pump? ...?

curious. Don't the '86 and '77 throttle cables interchange? Think the cable clamps at the covers are the same. Maybe you are missing that end clamp (#21 in Interalian's post) -- same on both the old cables and the quick release versions, I think. Older cables use set screws on the ends.

I concur - you match the cables to the controls, not the motor. Making an assumption here that the controls for your 1986 were of 1986 vintage as well. If that's the case, your 1977 should just take the same cables. I believe for the 1977, you need to add cable clip 0310729 to hook your existing cable up properly.

How about a pic of where the cables fit on your '77? A picture is worth a thousand words, or so they say.
