I am looking to buy a 70's or 80's 6cyl (115HP) merc. Are there any years that are worse then the others? What should I watch out for?

thanks

Of that age the degree of service and maintenance is crucial. A close look and a test run will tell a lot - a compression test will show uneven wear and predict (costly) future repairs.

All other equal, the latest possible model will have better mpg and benefit from improvements gained by the mfg. over the years.

70's models were pretty thirsty, 80's a little better. 90's somewhat better and late 90's & 2000+ are significantly better performing and running, still on less fuel.

Overall, on those motors, the newer ones would be best. If for no other reason, they have generally had less hours on them. That doesn't mean that just because it's newer, it will be in better shape than an older motor. Nothing really wrong with the older ones(70's), but try to get the newest one you can in good shape.

In 1978 (Or thereabouts) the S/S shafts were included along with the "Coilpack" ignition.
Also, the older the Merc, the more likely the problem with water cover/exhaust cover corrosion, and subsequent water leakage which may mean powerhead removal when you snap the bolts.
I really like old Mercs.. but you may need to get your hands a bit dirty on an old one. ;)
