I have learned from the site to do a compression test and spark test on a motor before buying; the wife is going to pick both of these tools at harbor freight for me, but is there any test I can do for the lower unit and if so how do I go about doing it, I looked in the top secret area but if I over looked it I appoligize.

all I know is start it and have it in the water to run, shift and gun to test gear for gear slipage.,Visual inspection cant be done for any gear wear or bad ears on the gear/ clutch dog. That is unless you open it.after the sale I'm sure.

As mentioned, you can't really check for gear/clutch dog wear without tearing into the lower unit. You can drain a little oil and see if there is water in it. Make sure she shifts ok, gears engage, and is not locked up. I've seen a good powerhead which wouldn't turn over due to rusted lower unit parts.
