Hi Guys,

Looking for some input. I am currently in the market for a used tiller 15hp motor. I have the option to purchase a 1976 15Hp Evinrude with Electric start, or a 1982 Suzuki DT16.

What motor do you think would be the best.

Whichever one runs best! Which one has a local dealer nearby? What's the asking price of each?

Suzuki is $400 and the Evinrude is $350. I know whichever one runs the best, but I was asking more from a reliability and maintanence standpoint.

If properly maintained then they should both run reliably. As for maintanence both will need service at some point which is why I asked about a local dealer. Service/parts!

If they both run equally the same then I wouldn't have a problem with either one.

Without a doubt the Evinrude because of the electric start and replacement parts are a heck of a lot cheaper.

Motors that old normally need parts to get them to be really reliable, and the johnson would be far easier to find new or used parts for at a reasonable price, therefore I'd choose it. I like the '77 and up 15 OMC's a little better than the '76, but it's still a good motor. The suzuki is good, but it's oil injected, I believe. I don't like that part of it, and the cdi ignition is expensive to replace if it goes bad.
I'd probably get the johnson, but if one was in noticeably better condition, I wouldn't be that scared of the suzuki. Parts would be more expensive for it for sure.

+1 just for the parts, Evinrude parts are and probably always will be easy to get, the Suzuki proabably not so much although they are very good engines.

The Erude 15 was practically indestructable, they really built them right back then, almost no plastic bits at all, don't let the age scare you.

this is of coarse if it checks out with good compression and all.

Just for the heck of it I checked here for props for these. The Evindude had a vast selection listed
from 6" to 11" 3 and 4 blade props.Yamaha had a few selections and no 4 blade.
Impellers yes for the Evinrude none for the 82 Yammy.

The Evinrude likely has points ignition system which did not work as well as earlier points systems and are not as nice as cd ignition on the 1977 motors.
