What to check for in a stale motor?

Hi all, New to the forum but seems your a smart bunch o people out there, I have a 83 ( best i can tell) 15m mariner which been sittin around my garage for ages, even worse it was sitting in an old 44 gallon drum and yep the water is all rusty and crap! motor is now out and still a litlle rusty on outside but wondering what to check first to make sure all is ok with it, It has been a reliable little motor and want to keep it that way, Thanks Guys

Take the plugs out, and squrit fogging oil or marvel mystery oil in the cylinders...soak them...turn the flywheel over a couple of times to distribute the oil in the cylinders and crank bearings...rebuild the carb, and fuel pump and change the water pump...you are good to go....

Replace lower gear oil.Check old oil for water.Pull prop and clean shaft area and grease it all up.
