hello

i have been to give my boat a good cleaning, and i have noticed that my bottom paint is very faded at spots and very matte/ dull looking. the rest of the boat looks decent, BUT

whenever i try to clean the dirt off the bottom paint with a wet rag, the paint seems to come off all over the rag, they paint is very chalky looking and i can rub my finger accross the paint and it will rub off on my finger. is this supposed to happen? i was thinking of giving the bottom paint a spray with some silicone or spray wax or even tire shine to give it a shine and bring back some finish. i cant wax it by hand because the paint will turn my waxing rag or pad red (color of paint) in a matter of seconds.

How should i go about this guys?

Thanks again

Mine does the same thing.
But, I admit I buy the cheapest paint. The last batch didn't even help against barnacles.

ALL Bottom paint will transfer if you run a rag or hand over it. You may be due for new paint if its all faded. Its only good for a year or two. I would reommend an ablative anti fouling.

The purpose of bottom paint is to protect the gelcoat/fiberglass against marine growth, not look good, get it repainted using GOOD bottom paint.

Re: what to do about bottom paint

depends on what was done to the boat with the previous owner or owners. possibly painted over the gelcoat because they couldn't get the luster out of the gelcoat. i did the bottom of my boat using the same techique i used on the rest of the boat and got the same result. try a small area where you won't really notice. take some 400 grit sand paper and wet sand. see whats under that paint. you'll know whats under there in no time. if there was chalking under the paint that they couldn't get off you'll notice. the chalking will come off with the wet sanding. if this is what you find, continue if you like. work your way up to 2000 grit. got the luster back to the bottom of my boat that same way. from what you are saying, it sounds like the bottom was painted over just to cover up what was there. but just try a small area and let us know.

I beg to differ, a good 2 part poly will look fantastic (true mirror finish) and last at least 5 to 10 years.

Yea,if its meant to be a Finish coat, but if its there to protect against growth, contingent on whether the boats kept in the water, then the look isnt ascetic, its protection, that's what i was referring to.

i was just trying to shine up the chalky finish... the boats on a trailer, not in the water, so im not too worried about function

try a HIGH pressure wash, it should strip off any loose or oxidised paint, then worry about polish. you could always strip it down to the gell coat, wet sand it with 400 grit and buff it to a shine with cut polish
