What to do about crumbly wires and no spark??

I just picked up a 9.8 model 110 for $50 and it has no spark. One of the brown wires that comes from the stator plate (there are two) is broken and is about 3" short. When I went to splice it, it kept breaking off shorter and shorter; what's with this? All the wires seem crumbly. Will one broken brown stator wire stop both cylinders from sparking? Should I replace the wiring? A new switch box costs about $200 and the motor probobly isn't worth that. Any advice?? Thanks in advance.

That is common on an old motor. Run a compression check and see what shape the cylinders are in. If you have good compression, then it may be worth the money.

There are no points, just a "black box" with a bunch of wires coming out of it. They go to the coils also (two red ones). What are the chances both coils are bad? Or, is there any easy way to test the CDI box?

A 9.8 with 2 brown wires from the stator denotes a magneto ign. system very easy to repair. if it is a magneto then those are only grond wires to the kill switch, just remove the flywheel and run two new wires to the pointss( it will proble need points ans condenser any way--Bob--How about a serial number

Chances are slim the coils are bad. Look to the primary ignition. If compression is good it;s worth fixing. Do it yourself or use an independant shop that can get parts from sources other than Brunswick Mercury.<br /><br />-W

Bob, do I do the voltage checks while I "pull" the motor through with the pull rope? Does the flywheel generate the voltages across the trigger and stator coils?<br />Thanks, Rick
