What to do if trim/tilt pump fails

Hey guys-

So my trim/tilt pump is making a funny noise. I have a 1992 Bayliner Capri with the 4.3L Merc I/O. So, what should I do if the pump fails and the drive is down? Is there a way to lift the drive without the pump? The trailer is too low to trailer the boat with the drive down. Last, would it be a bad idea to lift the bunks and stanchion 12"-16" so when I forget to trim the drive up I don't drag it?

Thanks.

Re: What to do if trim/tilt pump fails

if your tilt up/trailer button fails to lift the drive, you can, using a 7/16 inch wrench, remove the two fittings from your tilt/trim pump inside the boat and catch the fluid, or remove the fittings from the rams (but can be worse due to water intrusion if in the water), and manually lift the outdrive up and tie it off to your transom. The key is relieving pressure from the rams so you can lift the outdrive.

Someone please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Today seems to be the "trim" problem day! Anyway, when mine failed, I had wifey hold the trim up button and I just lifted it. Mine held in the up position however, had it not, I would have used a tie-down and tie it up.

Let me know if you need to borrow the wifey.

pop off 1 of the plastic caps, remove 1 clip, slide the pin out of the trim rams/drive and tie up with rope.

Thanks for the ideas. I don't plan on going out until I have it looked at, but I figure it would be good to know what to do just in case.

What do you think about lifting the bunks and stanchion?

I have the same set-up on a '91 (I am guessing)....check your oil level and consistency. If its, lower the drive and drain it.....replace with Mercruiser fluid or standard 10w30 will work.

If it fails on the button, cross the solenoid to lift the drive up
