You can buy a complete new after market lower unit with a 3 year warrantee from SEI for about $800. Why fool around with anything else?

By the sounds of it you need to replace it. What happened to take that size chunk out of it ??? Any photos of it ??

Ouch!

You can sometimes find decent used units on ebay, or as suggested above, pick up a rebuilt one or new aftermarket one.

Just do an inet search for SEI Marine. They are in Florida, they will ship it to you and you don't need to send your old one back.
