What to do? Paint Color

I am not normally this indecisive, but I'm having a really tough time deciding if I should change the color of the 1972 Nineteen we just purchased.

The original color was gold and the front seats/recliners are in pretty good shape. The top has faded to cream and I can't buff the gold back up again. The quandry is... I saw a Correct Craft at Chatuge that had the most beautiful blue I've ever seen. But.... I'm all about keeping a classic boat as original as possible. Ziggy made a great point in another post-these classic beauties are fast approaching antique status.

So, What do you guys think.
1) Paint it the blue?
2) Keep it gold (and find an addition blue boat too :D)

Thanks for your input.

imho.....

keep it original. specially if your boat in general is mostly original...

as for changing it to blue... well, that's my favorite color so i'd be partial to that. especially after seeing this... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=275852 that ones just too much for me... what a gorgeous boat. there's also a cat here that did change color. he went to yellow. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=345995 i thought that one came out real sweet too. especially for the color change. i liked his idea of yellow also for the fact that yellow apparently was a fairly rare color and low production runs like my lime green.

how's your carpet and vinyl? if they are in good shape that'd make me think no color change too. if they're gonna get replaced soon. find out if AristoCraft has some oem material for ya. carpet and vinyl. if they don't have some, like they don't for me. a color change of some sort will occur when these items do get replaced best i'm finding out. i've not found any replacement to my carpet nor any vinyl in my meager searches for what i need.. what i have just looks pretty used... which it is....:D

Hi Ziggy,

Thank you so much for your opinion it means a lot. The front recliner seats (vinyl) are actually in pretty good condition, just a slight color change at the top-probably from sunscreen on hands. The dashboard is pretty good too.

The carpet is not original and the back seat vinyl will need to be replaced.

We most likely will change the woodgrain contact paper to carpet and do the glove box and control panel in mahogany (as a nod to the contact paper.)

We live a little over an hour away from AristoCraft :D and Bill took us through the place. He doesn't have any gold vinyl or carpet - but he suggested finding someone that restores cars for suppliers. Good idea-we have an antique car club her locally (tiny town) and I'm going to check with them.

I have to agree with you on the color change. Once I got past being absolutely in love with the blue I just don't think I can venture off from being historically correct and mostly original. I absolutely love the way the yellow is coming out on that repainted Nineteen. I bet she really gets attention!

We don't consider ourselves owners of these boats, we are just caretakers for all to enjoy.

So..... next year it will be time to look for something blue! WHOO HOOO!:D

Well, since you asked; here is my two cents.............

I have done "correct" restorations and "resto-mods" on old cars and old boats. Your color choice will depend on your intended use. If you are trying to win best in show for a "restoration" then by all means go original. If you are working for an end product for your own enjoyment then go for the blue... or whatever else floats your boat.

Personally, I have enjoyed following my own creative impulses.

Either way, have fun with it.

We're sticking with the gold. I've ordered custom vinyl dye & Fiberglass dye from Parasol using a sample from my seats. As much as I really want a blue boat, it's not going to be this one!

Also looking for gold carpet, and will let you know when I find it.

Thanks for helping on the decision.
