What to do to 85 Hp Evinrude

I bought a 17' v-hull boat with a 1979 85 hp Evinrude at the begining of last summer for $850. It was by far the best investment ever made. I grew up in Wildwood four blocks from the beach one way and the bay the other, and never had a boat. Anyway I ran the boat religiously 3-4 times a week every week. Purchased a Boat slip for this summer, and want to continue the Fun. I did not winterize the motor :-(......went back to college early and didnt get a chance. I did start it this weekend, just by using new gas and doubling the oil mixture with the gas. The boat cranked rigth over, ever without charging or jumping it. It took me a few mins to get it started, only because the primer felt hard, and actually was just stiff, not primed. I left my muffs at the shore house so i didnt run it for long, but want to know what i should do to maintain the condition of the motor. Last season I never had a problem with the engine, started first crank every time. Any and all help is appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks

If you ran it without water, even for a tinny winny minute, ya need to change out the water pump. Even if you hadn't ran it without water, that's something that needs doing every year or so anyway. Do that and then run it it like ya stole it.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

What is entailed in changing the water pump, also my controls dont seem to make and warning sounds, is there a way I can get this to work, or hook up some sort of temperature gauge? Also if the boat does pump water still why must I change the pump?

The engine is water cooled and without water, just for a second, when you're at speed, is sudden death for the engine. Changing the waterpump every year or so is cheap insurance. I'm not sure what the rest of your problems are but if you plan on maintaining the engine yourself, (changing the waterpump, alarms, etc.), you probably should get yourself a shop manual. I went out last night and bought a manual. I am gonna do the water pump, what i am not sure of is what should i be looking for in the manual to change it? does it just require dropping the lower unit and changing the impeller and all other seals and gaskets? I guess what i am asking is, Is the impeller the water pump? or jsut part of it? what else do i need to change? Thanks for all your help.

Se. The impellor is part of the water pump. Get the kit with the housing and replace the whole thang. Yes, you drop the lower unit to get to it. I don't know which manual you have but there are seven bolts ya gotta remove from the l/u. One from the trim tab, the one under the trim tab, the one in front of the trim tab and two on each side and then the shift under the carbs. Thanks alot for all your help. I am going to Utah for a week then have college Graduation, so i wont be able to do it for a few weeks, but i'll let you know how it goes, and thanks alot for all your help. I am sure i will have more questions once i get started.
