300 hours is nothing, if properly maintained. for comparison Airplanes usually get a major overhaul around 1000 to 1500 hours, on a car that equates to 80 to 100K miles.
I hate to get off topic, but no airplane (piston) gets an overhaul at 1000 hrs. Recommended TBO on engines by most manufacturers is 2000 hrs, but I've flown many 3500+ w/o overhaul. You can't compare an aircraft engine to a boat or auto; they run high compression, 110 octain leaded fuel, with a max RPM of 2700, for 98%of their life at max power. You are correct that maintenance is key. Aviation is unique that it makes owners (via regulation and, kinda, thru education) maintain their aircraft. Any engine that's properly maintained will see a very long usefull life.
But 300 hours isn't much!
