What to do while Engine is OUT of boat? Maintenance?

Hi all

Have a volvo 4.3gi that is currently pulled while I have some work done to my hull.

The outdrive has been serviced already, and I am trying to decide what to do with the engine itself, prior to putting it back in the boat. Less than 300 hours on the engine

This engine is new to me. Supposed to be in excellent running order, but it was not in the water last summer despite being summer then winterized.

oil/filter?
plugs?

what else should I take care of now as a general 'new to me' maintenance issue?

I figure somethings are probably much easier while the engine is pulled..

Thanks!

If this is a saltwater boat, I would be inspecting and possibly painting the oil pan. One little nick in the paint can rust through in a hurry.

Inspect the coupler, maybe replace it. If it's an old starter and hard to get to, may as well replace that too. Heck may as well replace it with a 383 stroker, spin that prop right around eh?

I'd pretty much replace anything that would otherwise have the engine pulled to replace ... ;)

Check and maybe upgrade the bilge pump. It buried under many IOs. While your digging around down there clean and paint the bilge. A motor likes a clean home.

Oh - new belts.

thanks. new bilge pump going in for sure. new paint all around, so she is getting a clean room to sit in. belts appear to be in great shape.

I was debating starter since it is a tight squeeze to reach back to it once the engine is mounted, but i am struggling with fixing something that aint broke...

I would definitely pull the pan, clean it really good, make sure oil pickup screen is in good shape and clean.
Consider installing a remote oil drain tube.

What I did when I got my motor out, was to have a beer.

I would do oil pan gasket and also rear main seal.

with less than 300 hours (that is equivalent to about 10,000 miles on your car)

If it was my boat and motor, here is what I would do:

clean the motor
paint the motor, two coats on the pan
drain the oil
install an oil drain hose kit that makes it out your drain plug
install a remote oil filter kit
replace the raw water impeller
inspect the fuel cell for bad paint
clean the starter terminals
pull the starter, disassemble, inspect and refresh if needed
inspect the power steering cooler (as they generally act as the strainer for the motor)
inspect the exhaust manifolds and risers
inspect the power steering ram and steering cable
clean the bilge (paint only if required)
replace the blowers
replace the bilge pump, hose, and plastic thru-hull fitting that probably is weather checked
replace belts and plugs

no need to pull the pan, put a rear main seal in it or a pan gasket.

Now, if you want a lot of power, Walt would probably put in a stroker. I would probably consider a supercharger if your engine bay is cramped.
