just bought a starcraft ss160 for my 2011 60hp etec.now I will have a cedarstrip boat of 17 feet length with no motor to sell.boat is beautiful and I think would sell for much more with a motor attached.i have looked over the 85 and it will need a lower unit seal replacement, and the tilt trim will need to be o ringed also.now on to the meat of the problems.motor was running and just stopped and has no spark atall.previous owner had it tested and stator is no good apparently.i tried another power pac and it was still dead so im leaning to believing the stator is pooched.outboard ignition.com has several easy tests im going to do tomorrow to make sure im on the right track.ive done a comp test already and I got an amazing 120psi on all cylinders with a good comp tester.you could eat off of this motor it is so clean and the paint on said powerhead is like brand new.is this motor worth putting 400 or so into it?the Johnson is a 1976 model with the 6 amp stator .I think i could recoup my investment on the motor with the added value of the cedarstrip sold with a good running motor.any thoughts on this ?any other tests I might do to make sure its the stator ?

Id do it up, i like chancing my arm even though i lose out on them often enough.
Sounds like you have another powerpack so your risk lies predominately in whether the timing base is ok or not. I think you can ohmn test it without needing the stator to be working. Check cdi troubleshooter on that.

The only other problem could be the coils, they come in at $30 each so shouldnt be too much of a burden.
Id buy a secondhand stator and reinsulate it.
I find the outside paint job matters the most when selling

did the tests as recommended by outboard ign.com.checked stator resistance which should read approx. 500 ohms and got 600ohms.checked the dva output from stator which should read at least 150v or more and got zero.guess the stator is pooched .bosunsmate, the outside paint is pretty good considering its 36 years old plus.

Hey, I've got a stator from a '76 johnson 85hp and I'm in ontario as well.
bought the motor for parts from a guy for a few hundred (scoring in the cylinders) and i'm considering now dumping the rest of the parts.

Does this engine have factory power trim? A nice selling feature.

yes.though id say it needs a re-seal.my theory is if I put 4 to 500 into it to get her up to snuff id get approx. a grand or so more for the boat so in the end im ahead.boats with good running motors sell so much easier than those without at least up here.motor is also clean on the outside though faded from 30 plus years of use.

Engines with power trim sell faster. Compression when new would have been 120-125, so it's got solid compression. Sounds like it's worth fixing.

Well let me know if you want to work something out for that stator and/or timing base. I was going to fix up this motor to sell it or use it but by the time I bore the block, get the pistons, seals and gaskets, I would have more into it with initial investment than what anyone would be willing to pay for a 37 year old motor.
