What to do with a '87 I-6 115 merc, bearings are bad

So, When I get a new motor, is there somewhere other then the land fill I can send this. the local Merc marina does not want it. I figure the power trim is ok and the housing is not cracked ( just dirty). I'll take the prop off. Figure I can clean it up and sell it ( its not damaged).

Wife does not like the idea of turning it into a flower pot (I thought, I've seen turned over wheelbarrows in gardens or bikes, why not a merc with flowers comming out of it!

Hate seeing things going to land fills!

Are there places that will take this ( also it weighs alot!)

Well, what ya OUGHTA do is take it apart and fix it! Thus breaking yourself in thoroughly on the way to becoming a Boner-Fied Mercury Mechanic!! What better experience than working on what is arguably the Best of the Best of all the Inline Sixes.

Failing that, certainly don't take it to the landfill!

eBay is an excellent venue for selling motor parts. Just go into eBay Motors and query on something like "Mercury Lower Unit" or "Mercury Power Trim" and you'll see what I mean!

Just strip all the useable parts off the motor (electronics, starter, carbs, etc) and market them separately or as a set (set of carbs, for example). Sell the lower unit separately and if you're sufficiently motivated, separate the powerhead from the center section and sell the center section with integrated Power Trim N Tilt, as a unit. That way shipping will still be somewhat manageable. Or you could just do Local Pickup Only, of course that limits your market considerably.

Even the powerhead, if the crankshaft is still spinning, may have value to someone who wants to rebuild. Starting with a Midwest, Fresh-Water-Only motor is certainly better than trying to rebuild some Salty Dog.

If you were closer to me I'd be more than happy to buy it from you, that's Fer Sur!

I have a shot 200+hp Johnson that I'm trying to sell complete first.
If that fails I'll (as said above) scavenge the stator (recently replaced with a used one that was quite a few bucks) and other valuable parts off it which will bring me more cash the the complete unit!
And when that's all said and done you can still get a nice little chunk of change for the scrap metal in those things!

I'm in Iowa, and the wife would kill me if I try to fix the thing. ( Also, don't have a work shop to do that in!) The thing runs, and I thought ran OK, just hard to start, and had a rattle under load, Like the sounds of a lifter on a car engine with the lifer cover removed. I was not expecting the thing to be bad ( I had 2 marinas say its bad). I'm sure it would be a good winter project for someone, and could turn around and sell it. But here in Iowa, most people have nothing to do with water. ( Heck I run into lots of people her who cant swim, and cant understand why I would wast money on a boat.)

I'm going to have the marina were my boat is, swap the motors, He can then take it.

But I will look on e-bay.
