I have a bunch that didnt work for me, seems like a waste to just flush them down the toilet?? Is there any way to give them to someone that needs them?

We had a similar issue a few years ago and if I remember right there was an organization called flying doctors that collected unused medicines and used them to treat poor people around the world.

Flushing puts them into the water supply. Filtration doesn't remove them. Can you say superbug? Seriously

Not sure about superbugs although it does seem plausible, but there are documented cases of fish with both sex organs and other sorts of stuff that shouldn't be that have been traced to flushed medications.

It was our local hospice that provided the contact information and it was a very convenient way to responsibly dispose of the medicines. I will be happy to call them first thing Monday and see if they still have some current information. If you have a hospice in your area, they might be able to help also.

The person that you give the pills to may have a reaction to them and die! FLUSH THEM

NEVER flush medications. They DO affect the the water supply. If you do want to dispose of them as opposed to giving them to organizations as previously mentioned, mix them all together in a bag and turn them in to any pharmacy where they have proper methods of disposing. Mixing them together merely assures you that they will not be resold. For the most part, they become less identifiable and can't be resold.

Why do you suppose they are prescription only? It is because they pose a risk, sometimes deadly risk, to the wrong people with the wrong malady.

A physician or pharmacist can dispense them responsibly.

If flushing them puts them in the water supply I sure don't want to use your water supply.

Usually you shouldn't have antibiotics left as you're supposed to take them until go e.

The city police departments in our county have drop boxes for unwanted meds/dope/pipes/needles/guns/whatever you'd like to responsibly get rid of and not get charged for having. That or call your pharmacy.

Ayuh,.... My Love, Deb, is a care giver for older folks,...

When the time comes, 'n her clients no longer need her services,...
Her standard operating procedure is to take all the prescription meds, 'n put 'em into a plastic baggie full of wet coffee grounds...
After a few days, they decompose, 'n break up...
Then that baggie is put inside a 2nd baggie, 'n it goes into the trash, headed to the landfill....

As already stated a few times,...
Never Ever dump prescription meds down the toilet,... Never.... Ever....

Re: What to do with lots of leftover antibiotics?

When my mother passed away, they requested that all of the left over medications be given to the hospice nurse that helped her, they cannot be reissued to patients in the US, but they have programs that use them to treat patients in other countries that are in need, never flush them, if you don't want to give them to an organization that uses them out of the country, then take them to a pharmacist or call the local police dept to see if they run a disposal program. Again, never flush them.

Can only speak for Maine. Check with your local police departments they will take them in and make sure they are disposed of properly. As said above DO NOT flush them, and there is another reason to remove them from your home, you do not want someone (think small children here) accidentally getting into them.

Every commercially manufactured prescription pill sold in this country is identifiable by shape, color, and marking. Wonder why it's not OK to 'resell' prescription medicines in this country, but OK to give to citizens of another ...
