What to do with my old Garmin GPS 75 ?

My first GPS was a Garmin 75 May 1995. Turned it on last week and after about 30 minutes of "searching the sky" (too long even for this 8-channel sequential receiver) the screen went blank. It was as if it had been turned off. Power supply was fine (12 volt car adaptor) I tried turning it back on, it would power up and start to search for satelites again but now would only stay on for a minute or so before going dead again.
I emailed Garmin support and was given a perfunctory reply to mail it in, $99 flat fee to repair...
I am fond of this old thing and have accessaries to use it in boat and car, but could get a new 12 channel parallel receiver hand held for very little more than $99.
Any ideas?

Don its time to send that GPS to GPS heaven. It served it's time here on earth.

Get a new one. They are more reliable anyway.

You're in a tough spot buddy, I too become attached to things that should only be functional. My Garmin e-trex is still working fine and has become a friend but looking at the new ones with mapping, especially when all the navigational aids in N. America can be included (!) makes it clear there is a time to move on. Good luck.

Donate the old unit to a charter boat. They will nail it on the wall as a warning not to bring personal GPS units onboard.

Ken – GPS is now at the chip level. Unless charter boats are going to start nailing people to the wall (this could get entertaining :) ), there’s not much use in fighting it. A couple of companies are making GPS receiver wrist watches in the sub-$500 range. I think Suunto was one. Don’t know how good they are but they will only keep getting better and less expensive.

Don – if Clinton can claim $50/pair for donating his used underwear to the Salvation Army, you should be able to donate the old receiver and deduct the full retail value of a replacement unit. Then again, maybe not…your old GPS receiver isn’t likely to come up on an Ebay auction. :)
