What to do with this boat?

Short story, this was a free (for the hauling) boat I picked up recently. My plan was to scrape it out (has a running 454 in th e boat and a rebuilt jet drive still in the box).

But, I keep looking at it and, well there is somthing about it that I've put the scrapping plan on hold until I think it over some more. Keep in mind this is a 35 year old boat but the lines and layout sure say its much more like todays boats than what I expect from a 70s boat. (By the way, it was made by SlickCraft and is 22' 8" with a real tape measure not counting the swim platform.)

Now I admit, the color is fugly as they come (that brown reminds me of you know what) but still, there is just something about it. I fear I am about to do what I tell everyone to never do, become attached to a boat and put more mpney in it than it will ever be worth. What can I say, sometimes boating is an affair of emotion and not $$$.

So here are some pics, what do you all think, scrap or no. By the way, the deck, transome and hull are sound as a dollar. No FG work needed.

Interesting looking boat. As for opinions on whether to scrap it or not, let's see...
  • it's got a running engine
  • got a rebuilt jet drive
  • deck, transom and hull sound as a dollar
  • has a unique look and you're getting attached to it
Sounds like an easy choice to me. I've seen lots of boats in the resto section that started out in a lot worse shape than that. Nobody fixes up old boats for the investment. As another guy with a 1970s boat in a similar fugly color that I also formed an attachment to, I hope you decide on a resto. You could keep the '70s vibe but replace the ugliest stuff, like the Vegas lounge style seats :p

Bubba if you decide not to keep it and your not to far away I would be happy to come take it off your hands . With an interior and paint that looks like it would be a sweet ride :D.

Very unique vessel. If you restored it, I can?t see how you would end up disappointed. I hope to see it in the resto section soon.

Bubba I would think it would be quite easy to cut in a few windows there and put in some lexan . I would say call a glass shop and tell them what you want you should be able to one stop shop it with the lexan windows and rubber seals all at one place.

Which end is where you pour the money in?

Bubba I have 3 restos to do right now if ou count my 63 ford F100 unibody customcab big back window pickup plus the 64 Crestliner Del Rio ( to go with the F100 ) aand the 74 Larson 1700 Shark that only really needs a fresh interior and paint like yours needs :D. The Truck and Crestliner are full resto's though . I have found the largest opening is usually where you toss the money :D.

kind of strange to see the controls on the left side of the boat instead of the right or is that port and starboard?

Re: What to do with this boat?

Can I save myself some time and just use the loader on my tractor to dump the $$$ in or do I have to do it by hand???

Bubba I would guess the loader would speed things up a bit :D. I really dont see a huge investment in that boat ( the Deck transom and stringers are good and the motor and jet drive are good. Looks to me like probably a grand in the interior . The paint maybe $500.00 on the outside if you do the painting. I think for less than $2000.00 if you watch things and do most of it other than the sewing yourself you would have a really sweet boat ( including the new windows).

Um, kinda looks like a bayliner capri with an off-shore hull...bit of a misfit. You gotta get some in the water pics, it would be interesting to see how she sits....kinda looks top heavy and ungainly on the trailer. I'm thinking a huge metal flake black...with some white/black interior.

Re: What to do with this boat?

looks like it'd be a real doable project to me. with a good boat and all the good parts. just the cosmetics... i like the dash myself. i like the 70's look for dashboards...

i think ya should keep it... i love the style.... very unique to be sure.. i've seen that design before in pics and it catches my eye... that and scimitars. that's what i want...

I like the steering wheel on the 'correct' side.

With that 454 I'd feel like I was cruising around in a restored 70's Pontiac GTO.

(But then again, that's me. I also never liked that all tiller-controlled outboards are 'left handed')

Haven't you heard of the slogan "What can brown do for you" ? LOL
Personally, I like it. Update the upholstery a bit with some cream color mixed in and loose the fake woodgrain dash, a good cleaning and you never know. At the very least, it's sellable with a tidy profit.

That boat is definitely a "do it, don't scrap it" boat. Maybe some purple/lavender thrown in there somewhere! Good luck! :)

Re: What to do with this boat?

Bubba do some good photo shop ework on the paint and I bet she will see the boat you see . Dont forget to put in the new tinted windows in the doctored pics :D. I see a sweet ride there myself but then again I was into early sixties ford trucks before they became the new fad :D. My 63 F100 unibody is the main reason I picked up the 64 Crestliner Del Rio they will work together perfect once painted up to match .
