Im supposed to go check out a boat that has a rebuilt 190/470. It has new risers and starter. What should I be looking for when I check out this boat?

If you have to ask I suggest you bring it to a mechanic or bring a friend along that is VERY savy about boats or you will get taken.

4" heat exchanger, not 3"
a belt driven alternator, if not plan to eventually add one.
engine water pump housing weep hole is dry or dripping while running.
Anti freeze in engine? Color of it?
Engine oil level and color of it.
Bring a compression tester and check the cylinders to see what they're at.

Ayuh,.... A Different boat that isn't powered by a 470....
boo hiss. i STILL haven't found a real solid reason not to buy one--realizing that you should pay less than what you would pay for an otherwise equivalent 4.3l. the biggest reason would be that you'll have a harder time finding a cheap block if this one goes...that being said:
good advice from eric. i'd add to check the outdrive oil as well--color as well as the level. check the floor/transom for soft spots. check the boots under the outdrive for rips/general condition, especially the u-joint bellows. make sure it shifts smoothly into/out of gear ON THE WATER. if it doesn't, don't assume "it just needs a cable adjustment". and make sure you take it for a test drive. starting it on muffs in the driveway isn't enough.

If you aren't a mechanic and don't enjoy working on your boats engine all the time is about the biggest reason of all, not everyone wants to spend all there free time babysitting a 470.

Being as it's an open deck designed block made out of aluminum with a cast iron head means anytime you get an overheat, you will likely need to replace the head gasket, that doesn't happen with GM engines.

It's a very expensive process to replace the engine if it dies completely. There isn't even a usefull replacement type that will bolt up to the exhaust tube and motor mount setup.

Cam seals that will eventually leak antifreeze into the engine oil. No other engine has that problem.

Then there is what bondo said, NLA parts, and there are more every year.

true. but any any 20+ year old boat is going to have problems. maintenance, i think, becomes a way bigger issue at a certain point than the type of engine.

course, how many "i have a 470 with a cracked block" threads do you see?

yeah, like i said, i think this is the biggest problem. isn't a 3.0 a bolt on?

true. and of course the charging system. neither one of these is a big deal in the grand scheme of boat ownership. i've had plenty of problems this season (and last) with my engine--none have been 470 specific.

i can't comment on this--haven't had a problem getting parts at all thus far, and aside from the exhaust, i'm not aware of a whole lot of 470-specific parts. certainly doesn't seem to be as big of an issue as with the yamaha/OMC crew. i got mine for $1k less than what i would have paid for a 4.3l, or a 25% discount. i was also aware of the issues with the engine, and can work on it myself. it's a tradeoff, and 2 seasons in, i'm happy with my decision, as are other 470 guys. this engine is light, powerful, good on gas, closed cooling is a mixed blessing (but probably better for salt water), and likely quicker than an equivalent era 4.3. damn. i got sucked into another 470 thread. does anybody care to comment on the type of oil he should use?

So the reason you asked for advice on this was.................???
Sounds like you're mind is already made up, despite what appear to be some compelling reasons to be wary.
My advice: Go get that boat!

Re: what to look for

I talked to the owner. Motor was rebuilt. Freshwater cooling system. Aluminum risers, alternated was installed. Going to look at it tomorrow. It seems that it was redone the correct way. I always test compression on boat engines. Been looking at a few boats recently. I don't mind the maintence.

Well good luck with it, let us know how you make out. As you may know just because the PO says it's rebuilt doesn't mean didley. Just a line to sucker someone in. Unless you see actual machine shop receipts for the work done or pictures of it, that would mean zero to me, personally.

Hope it works out for you.

btw, fyi, all 470's had freshwater cooling from the factory wasn't added by someone after.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I just assumed most I/o' s were not freshwater cooled. Is there a FAQ or somewhere I can learn about this motor. I'm looking at the boat tomorrow. It is not expensive. I'm not going to take it 30 miles offshore. I know about Outboards and that's what I would like to buy but Ive always liked this fishing machine that I'm going to look at. If I get it and this motor goes maybe it'll end up with some transom work and an outboard.

Re: what to look for

So from what I gather to ask and look for

documentation of the rebuild

check for 4" riser the new ones are aluminum that were installed

I would assume that a new manifold would be aluminum too but I'll check

alternator was installed

check boots and bellows under outdrive

compression

all fluids

the guy says we can take it for a test ride

Test for smooth shifting into fwd, n, rvs

Where is this weep hole I'm supposed to be looking to see if fluid is leaking? I think by the water pump but where is it located?

I read about the usual rough idle at cold temps

What operating temp on the gauge should the engine be at?

Anything else?

Thanks for your help.

The feeling I get fro this motor is that it will blow up in flames while I'm trailering it home or Its gonna die on me on my first fishing trip and I'll get swept out to sea. We run in some pretty hard waters around here sometimes.
