I have some deck lid covers that i have made up out of wood. these covers go over the storage boxes and rod holder box on my boat.My question is what or how should i seal these so that they do not fall apart?

will primer and oil baised rust o lium work?
should i paint resin on first then prime & paint?
if so do i have to lay fiberglass it stop from cracking?

your help would be great.

(WOOD IS NOT PRESURE TREATED)

If you want to go the easy route buy some oil based paint. Thin the first couple of coats by 25% - this will make sure it soaks in the wood. After the recommended drying time start applying your top coats. Should sand between coats. Get the edges really good.

It really depends how critical these pieces are. If they are not and easy to replace, then just do as gcboat suggested. However if you really want to seal then then use a few coats of resin followed by gelcoat or a polyurethane paint such as Brightsides. Or if you really want, you can even put a layer of matt over it.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I seal all wood with epoxy resin thinned with MEK so that it penetrates better.

Re: what to seal with

I just made some seats . First I applied several coats of poly-based oil stain sanding lightly between coats. Make sure to cover the entire thing. Next apply 2 heavy coats of marine varnish(sand a little between coats if you want a furniture like finish) Be sure to use stainless screws if you plan to screw them down and seal the screw holes with varnish .The wood I used was 3/4 inch maple paneling (approx 40 bucks for a 4 by 8)
