Re: what to use

Go to a bait/tackle store and tell them where you are going to fish. Lake, open ocean, bay, river, etc. They will be glad to help you with all the information you need.
Todays fish finders are pretty accurate instruments. The biggest problem is setting them properly to separate bottom features from fish. Read the manual for setting it or play with the sensitivity. Good luck.

Hello City of Sin,
One of the things that you may want to do is book a striped bass charter, see what they are using, see where they are fishing.

Get a chart of the area you want to fish, study it, look for drop offs along the shore, any rocky shore where the water goes from 30-40 feet up onto a shelf where they will feed on the coming tide. On a calm day take your boat go along 10-15 feet of water along the shore and sight fish. take herring or pogies, put a large chunk 3-4" on the hook cut small pieces for chumming. Do not use any sinker, free line your hook bait, always have your line slack so it will free fall like the chum, wait a couple of minutes and cast again. A lot of times when I anchor I throw some chunks 3-4feet from the boat and watch them sink, if stripers are there you will see them come for the chunks, then start to fish.

Do not spend anymore then 15 minutes in any one spot trying to locate fish, move on if you are not catching in 15 minutes. I know what you are going to do, you are going to fish where there is no fish for at least an hour. When you locate fish, fish it to the bite stops.

There is a lot of good fishing in Broad Sound, you have Nahant, Winthrop, Deer Island and surrounding area.

In todays world people want to know instantly how to fish and want to know where the fish are.
