I have purchased a 1968 9.5 hp MQ Seahorse, practically unused and in perfect condition. What parts, like rubber items, are likely to need replacing because of age? I have not started the motor.

The original fuel hoses are not alcohol resistant, so start with those. The original cork float was sealed in shellac which disolves in alcohol, so you might want to replace that. Grease points will be likely to have hardened grease and should be refilled. The water pump impeller should be replaced.

There is a thread called Awakening a Sleeping Outboard in the Engine FAQ forum that will also be helpful. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

You can use the search engine by entering "9.5HP" as one word to find multiple threads of interest to users of this series of motors which runs from 1964 through 1973.

Also, check the coils for cracking, discolouration or sweaty appearance. OMC coils from that era are often bad.
