Re: What towing capacity does a 1991 Jeep Cherokee have?

c130herc welcome fellow LSJC member. Man what a small world. I was looking at campers to tow with my cherokee and even some of the small 15'ers are weighing in at 2800lbs dry. So i might end up getting a 2wd cherokee or another tow vehicle. i pull my dads 2800lb 19ft ski boat and its not fun. my trans show it by dark fluid.

also the ford 8.8 is commonly put under a jeeps rear. It's a little stronger than a d44.

Yea but aint a 8.8 a C-clip axle?
and also I would not want a D35 behind me no matter what's been done to it. To most its not worth dumping tons of money into a D35 where they can pick up a 8.8 for about the price you fix the D35 up. If you add locker to a stock 35 you are seriously asking for it. Although I have seen this past weekend this guy was wheeling his YJ with a Welded D35 and done well. He was light on the gas and did not bounce.

We towed our Wellcraft Eclipse 216 (3500 lbs. including gas; not incl. trailer) from Baltimore, Md. to Western New York a couple of years ago with our '91 Laredo 4.0L automatic with the tow package. She had 160,000 miles on her. Had one extra leaf put on rear before the trip. It was close to 100* and the temp gauge would get up there climbing the hills in PA. but never to the "red zone" and dropped right back down after cresting the hill. Trailer has brakes so there was peace of mind there. Have since given the Jeep to relatives and it's still goin' strong. Tough critters! (Jeep, not the relatives) :)

Re: What towing capacity does a 1991 Jeep Cherokee have?

I had a 99 Cherokee Sport with the I6 during last boating season. With my Cheetah 2000LS and trailer it was pulling 4000 lbs. Seemed to stress the Jeep pretty good even with trailer brakes. Ended up trading it for an 03 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4 motor. The Ford pulls it like a dream. Don't think I could ever pull it with my TJ. Would probably pull the front wheels off the ground with having a 6" lift. One thing I did notice with the Cherokee, I had to be in 4WD on any ramp, otherwise the front tires would lock backing down the ramp.

Last Season (also my first):
