I have a 2003 Sea Pro 19' and i'm not sure if i need a 12v or 24v Trolling motor. not sure if i'll use it much. Also not sure if a 12v is strong enough. Any thoughts on the wireless RF Trolling motors. What would you guys recommend?

That's a big boat for even the most powerful 12V motor, so I would go with a 24V (or maybe even 36V) motor.

Bow or transom mount? They seem to work best on bigger boats if you can bow mount. A good fishing buddy runs a 24v on the bow and it works great.

Selecting a trolling motor for any type boat is interesting at best. First you have to know what type trolling you are planning to do. That is simply trolling down the edge of the water fishing for bass, crappie, or whatever, or are you talking about trolling open waters for schooled fish? The first type trolling really doesn't take a very powerful trolling motor. However, trolling open water can take a toll on a trolling motor. Especially if there is any type wind involved. Then you have to think about wind, current of the water (if any) weight of the boat, and the speed you want to move. So selecting the right trolling motor is not such a simply issue... The more powerful trolling motors can get very expensive and the battery voltages and weight and charging issues will needed to be understood too. So understand all those issues and go from there... I know that doesn't directly answer your initial question, but I hope that helps with some of the issues you need to think about while deciding...

I have both a kicker and bow mounted 24 volt, triple redundancy, nice to have a back up when plying the great lakes. But really my motives are for fishing. My boat is a 19 foot tin deep V, 90 Merc outboard, my kicker is a 15 Johnson, and my bow mount is a Motor-guide 24 volt 56 inch shaft. They all work and they all have a purpose. Show us pictures of your rig.

??? what's wrong with using your primary motor? be it outboard or sterndrive.. I've got a downrigger and have trolled just fine with it...

A friend has a remote control/GPS controlled electric trolling motor on the bow of a 22' bay boat that he uses in coastal mid-Atlantic, and he loves it (he also holds the world record for a striper on a fly rod). OPerates it from a wristband. But he uses it for positioning around the bridges and other structure, and to sneak around the flats--in other words, fairly short stretches and intermittently, rather than straight line trolling long distances for schools. For that he'd use the primary motor. My guess is that it's a 24v and he has those batteries in the center console.

I understand that in the Great Lakes and similar environs you need a small OB for long distance trolling, rather than the big motor or an electric.

I use this boat for fishing in the Bay and rivers South of mobile, AL. I think I'll go with a 24v 60" shaft bow mount. Thanks for all the replies Boat.jpg
