so I sold my 2005 suzuki gsx-r 600 for 5000. I want to buy a truck then a boat for the summer. My friend tells me to get a boat now because the price will go up soo. then get a truck later. well now i need a truck. trailer, boat gear and pple will be about3,500-4,000 lbs give or take. I am preapproved for a 5000 dollar loan on anything 2003 or older. would like to be 4x4 and extended cab...(dreaming right) i Know it will be hard for that much money. and i dont want to get stuck in the water with a 2 wheel drive truck. so what should i do? I wouldnt mind an suv but i would like a truck for hauling things. Is two wheel drive out of the question or are they ok? please help. thanx, Aaron.

every lender I've ever delt with (I deal alot with auto finance) says find as new of a truck as possible, the older- the less likely they are to approve the loan

I've never had a 4wd tow vehicle, and never wished I did. For 5K you could easily get a 5.4L F150 extended cab around here. (2000ish model year). My current tow rig is an 09 crewcab 2wd Hemi Ram, before that it was a 2002 extended cab 5.4L 2wd F150. 4000lbs should be no trouble for any 1/2 ton.

Are you handy. Before we got our current boat (weighs about 6K with gear and trailer) and truck to pull it with we towed with an 88 suburban 3/4ton. Built like a tank. No need for a loan. Has a SBC and parts are everywhere. Automatic, cruise control front and rear air, 3 row seats and 4wd. Still have that truck in case we ever need it.

My Ford has the automatic 4x4 which is where I always keep it. My boat isn't heavy, maybe 2500 lbs, but I've had the 4wd kick in maybe once or twice while pulling the boat out. I never had the feeling that I needed the 4wd on any ramp. On the other hand I had a 2wd F150 and I dreaded stop signs and lights at the top of hills during the winter, it was embarassing getting stuck on the ice. I wouldn't buy another truck without 4wd.

A late model Silverado/Sierra with a 5.3L will handle that as well. They are great tow vehicles.

Depends on what you mean by late model, but you could buy 2001-2002 silverados all day long for $5K around here. Just looked on CL and found 6 of them.

so in other words, I should buy not only my boats but also vehicles from minnesota!

Looked around my local classifieds, we have :
2000 - $9000 -114k miles
2002 - $9200 - 154k miles
2002 - $8500 - 139k miles
2002 - $10500 - 166k miles

Around here I would agree with that price range. I just bought a '96 chevy 4wd 5.7 half ton for $1500. There are plenty of 2000-03 trucks for the 5k neighborhood.

3 things that we have a lot of around here, pickups, boats and snowmobiles.

I've bought 3 boats and 2 snowmobiles from minnesota. We have tons just to the west of you also, but for some reason everyone thinks their garbage is worth better than new value.

It all depends on what you deem as "Late Model" I suppose. My thoughts were 2005 and newer as a "Late Model".

personally i wouldnt be taking a loan out on a $5000 vehicle.... Save your money first, then pay cash for the truck.... Boating is not cheap when things go wrong.

I just sold my 2002 FX4 F-150 with 200,000 miles for $4000 and people were offering over the asking price for it. I sold within 12 hours of listing it. Crazy...

That's for sure. A friend of mine likes to say that a boat just a hole in the water for you to pour your money into.

And stick with a 2 wheel drive. You'll get more truck for the money, and you'll get better gas mileage with fewer parts in the drivetrain to break. You don't really need 4 wheel drive unless you're off-roading (which you probably won't be doing when pulling a 4,000 lb trailer).

I grew up in northern Ohio and then lived in Michigan and Colorado, and I've been in a 2 wheel drive truck since high school. The only time I've ever been stuck was because I was doing something stupid, and then 4 wheel drive couldn't have helped me anyway (but we had a 2040 John Deere that worked fine).

The vehicle will pull your load no problem. As for the price, it all depends on the overall condition and the area really. For the mileage I would say it was a little high though.
My 2 cents only though.

Yeah, I'm with the kenman on the mileage. That's just shy of 19k a year. That truck has seen too much road in its life. Try to find something with no more than 15k a year and a verifiable history. Take your time.
