I know that an outboard unit mounts on or over the transom.
I know that an I/O unit goes through the transom.
What is a drive refered to that has the drive shaft going through the bottom of the boat with a rudder? ( V-Drive?) Thanks for info.

Re: What type of drive?

An Inboard is different than a V-Drive, both have propeller shafts thru the hull and a rudder.

A V-Drive has the engine is in the back. There is a drive shaft that goes forward to a transmisson for forward/neutral/reverse, and a propeller shaft that goes aft from the transmission thru the hull and out the bottom. That is where the V-Drive designation comes from, looking at the driveshafts from the side they would make a "V" lying down, or a ">" or "<" dependign on which side you were viewing from. A lot of Hotrod and Drag boats have this type of drive.

An Inboard has the engine in the middle of the cockpit and the driveshaft goes aft thru a transmission then a propeller shaft from there thru the hull. Many ski-tow boats have this type of configuration as well as larger cruisers.

Actually, you have a V-Drive boat and a Direct Drive boat. Many tournament sport boats, such as mastercraft, will utilize the Direct Drive system, not the V-Drive system.

The V-Drive, as far as I know, has a transaxle that comes out of the bow facing portion of the engine, then has a gear to a shaft that goes in the opposite direction. You will also see boats with their engines in the middle of the boat, 30' under, whos shaft comes directly from the bottom rear of the engine and out under the boat.
