Im not sure but I am really growing fond of that style boat. Can't wait to see it finished! Sorry I can't be help with the foam, I know a lot of people use pink sheet or blue foam from home depot and lowes. I know we are using this foam in our boat as templates then flotation.

Mika welcome to iboats and the Tin Can crew :D. What you want to do is get all that old nasty foam out of there and then go to Lowes or Home depot and get the sheets of Pink foam and put it in there . The pink stuff wont soak up water like all the other foams will.

John make sure to check out the Starcraft get together we are planning for next June in Virginia . Theres a link at the bottom of my post ooooor you can go to the Starcraft forum and see it there . I know you dont have a Starcraft but your hull was made by them and thats close enough for me :D.

Any one looking for foam should check out this site. It has a lots of different types. Some with structural features and some just for flotation. I was impressed with the selection and the information.

I don't think the foam would provide any structure (other than as a bottom support for the deck) to that hull design. I'd go with the pink as well if I were going to use any at all.

Most of us with 40+ year old starcrafts pulled styrofoam out from under our decks / I figure if sheet foam was good enough for the factory back then and my boat has lived 40 years and just now needs to be redone I am happy. Tin Cans are build rigid from the factory Fiberglass boats need a little extra due to the fact they dont have structural ribs running through them.

yea hold the floor ridgid. or spend alot of time forming the pink,id just pore it in, oh yea that amount of foam isnt floating anything, sound deading maybee

I've been thinking about the pour in stuff. If someone did use it could you lay a trashbag or plastic sheet down 1st so it doesn't stick to the boat?

Re: What type of fome would you use on this?(pix)

Thanks all. Its a 16 footer. I traded a flintlock(I payed 200 for)
for it. This will be my third boat restore.
1st. was a 68 Larson runabout back in 83.
2nd was a 78 Starcraft 16ft.(really turned out nice)
Oh ya, forgot the old 20ft. correct craft cabin my dad had.

I think the pour in fome would be better but I,m still going with the pink.
That will be fine with me.
Will be taking the transom out today, if I can stand the heat.

Pour in is fine in a Glass boat but in a tincan the pink sheets is the way to go .

the problem with the pour foam is that if it ever needs to come out... forget it.

also, the ribs of an aluminum have little channels in the center to allow water to drain back to the bilge. aluminums are more likely to leak due to the rivets, so if you develop one that water is going to have no where to go.

IMO poured in IS superior, but not in this application.

Re: What type of fome would you use on this?(pix)

Ok heres reality poured in foam and a riveted boat dont mix well thats why Starcraft didnt do it from the factory . The biggest issue with poured in is if the boat does leak it can hold water ect. against the aluminum and start piting it next thing you know you have holes in your hull . Starcraft used styrofoam planks from the factory for a reason. They didnt touch the bottom of the hull and allowed water to flow freely down there. Aluminum boats also dont have the deck sealed to the sides of the hull like a glass boat so it is also possible to get water in from above the deck and you want it to be able to make its way to the bilge which with poured in it wont .

Tim one other thing you want to do while you have the bottom of the hull bare is pick up a 2 pound kit of Gluvit and coat all the seams and rivets with it .
