Hi,
I am trying to replace the lower unit oil on my 1997 Evinrude 225 Oceanpro. Can I use Marine High Performance Gear Lube/SAE 90? I have a new quart /left over that I bought for a Mercruider sterndrive.
Or...Do I have to buy the oil that Evinrude recommends?

I was reading the manual...it says "use only OMC Evinrude/Johnson Ultra HPH marine gearcase oil".
Thanks
Lui

The Evinrude Ultra HPF has been superceded by HPF- XR or a super heavy duty HPF-Pro at your dealer. There may be bottles of Ultra HPF on the shelves, though. The HPF-XR is the best all around oil for your engine.

Here is a link to a test of various lower unit oils.
