What Type of Jack?

The recent "Do You Have a Spare.." thread was most informative. What type of jack should I purchase to jack a tandem axle trailer carrying a 21' deck boat? Also, where does one find a spare hub?

You first have to know what your boat and trailer weigh, then you need to find a jack which will lift that amount of weight or more, plus be able to reach high enough to get a wheel off. I carry a bottle jack and couple pieces of wood. It's the most universal and takes up the least amount of room. A 10 ton bottle jack weighs only about 4 or 5 pounds and take up less than a 8 cubic inches of space.
You could carry a full size floor jack, even get one of those aluminum racing type jacks but they take up lots of room and are pricey, not to mention a steel version can weight as much as a hundred or so pounds.

Tractor supply co for the hub, or Kendor boat maine in Franklin WI as well. If you have a round axle bass pro make a rolling jack that is very easy to use and inexpensive. Otherwise a hydraulic jack is next choice. I always say better to have two jacks than being one jack off.

i saw one the other day, that was like a ramp. you pull the good tire up on it, it lifted the flat off the ground.

The factory jack under the seat of my Grand Cherokee works perfectly, it's one of them screw tower jacks so you mignt want to take a look at your tow vehicles jack.

I've used my stock Ford car jack and a couple of pieces of 4x4 about 6" long. You only need to get the tire off the ground high enough to remove it. My local wallmart sells trailer rims with and without tires on them. 12" and 13" and they can order a different size if needed. Pretty white with a neat red pin stripe on the rim also .....

The scissors jack in my GMC Jimmy is perfect for my trailer, so I don't carry a different one. I do carry an X wheel lug wrench in the tow vehicle. The wrench that came with the SUV is wussy, even though it's the right size. It's come in handy, too, for helping out others when they don't have the right wrench for their trailer lug nuts.

My SUV toolbox also has a 24" long breaker bar and a set of heavy-duty six-point sockets, just in case. There's a socket for my hitch ball, too, and a 24" pipe wrench. A 30' tow chain is in there, too. A guy just never knows what's going to come up.
