Little confused about what type of oil to put in the crankcase. According to the manual its says use SAE 10w-30, which is a typical car/truck engine oil. I called a marina today and they said never use that type of oil. He recommended M4 which is a oil designed for Yamamha 4 strokes, which is the type of outboard they specialized in. I have a new Nissan 15hp 4 stroke. What kind of oil do i need?

10w-30 FCW or 10w-40 FCW...The 30 is better and you can use any 10w-30 if you can't find FCW....Just don't use synthetic oil.

Agreed....

Not knowing the age of your engine, your manual may have preceded the advent of FC-W certification (Four Cycle Water). FC-W is now the standard for marine applications, for a bunch of reasons. Automotive oil does not meet the shear, and anti-corrosive, standards that FC-W requires.

Here is a good link to what FC-W is all about: http://www.nmma.org/certification/programs/oils/fc-w.asp

Listen to your mechanics...!

Re: what type of oil to use in my 4Stroke

thanks guys, my motor is a 2009 model. As of right now i have Penzoil 10w-30 automotive oil in there. The motor has not been stated and not seen water yet. Gonna order some FC-W oil from Nissan. Until then, i guess for the first couple hours of break-in, the 10w-30 automotive wont hurt it. Engine will be lucky to see half throttle before the right oil gets put in.
