I have a 1984 90hp Johnson with model #J90MLCRD and would like to know what type / weight of oil to put into the lower unit so I can change it.

Re: What type of Oil?

the johnson/evinrude dealer sell gear lube in a tube. you put it in from the bottom. while you are there pick up a manual for your specific motor if you are going to do the maint. yourself. not being crass, the more you understand about your particular motor the longer it will last you. i'm still running a 1955 model 15hp rude.

The problem is I live no where near Johnson Evinrude Dealer or any Marine Dealer for that matter. But as soon as I get a chance I will take the 2 hour trip..

I did see that Walmart had a selection of marine supplies that is why I asked..

Thanks for the help guys!

The outboard gearcase oil that WalMart sells will do just fine, NBB. It should be labeled for all outboard gearcases except OMC electric and hydroelectric shift models, which yours is not.

Re: What type of Oil?

Hey JB, is hydroelectric the same as "Powershift"? Just wondering if I need to use a special oil in my "powershift" lower unit. Don't think I need to, since what came out of it was the Mercury synthetic (green stuff), and the L/U worked perfect last season, shifted real smooth. Thanks.
