I'm looking at possibly purchasing a 1999 Four Winns 214, but the outdrive has been removed and probaly sold. The engine is a 5.0 Penta. Any suggestions as to what outdrive would be compatible with this boat and a good place to possibly look for one. boats is great shape, however what I learn about the outdrive will way heavy on the decision to purchase. I ahve lots of mechanical skills, but I am new to boats. I appreciate any help you can offer a new guy.

The owners does not know what was on it? Why would they sell an outdrive off of a running boat? Was it sold or stolen? Do you need the entire outdrive (bell housing back) or just the leg???

Take a picture of the transom shield, or better yet, post the Volvo SN of the engine.

The picture is too small to tell for sure, but the shifter on the bellhousing looks a lot like an older OMC Cobra shift mechanism. Not the cable only that should be sticking trough on an SX or DP-S drive for that year. The color is also darker, like the older OMC's.
Without better pictures, I would walk away, hard to tell what someone did to it from that picture alone.

If that picture is the actual boat, I don't think it is a 99.

Let me try and post a better picture. So you think they did an outdrive swap?

Well it's an SX style, not an XDP (that's a good thing) the the drive new from volvo is going to cost about 6 to 9K depending on single or DP then you need props.
How about the engine, was it winterized? Could be cracked and needs replaced too. And there is no way of knowing without running it or doing some work to check it out.

I already assumed the engine would need going through based on the price. I have access to several 350 truck engines from that same time period if I need to swap a long block. I do appreciate the time you guys have provided to answer my questions. Can you expand on the single or DP comment, are they interchangeable and how would I determine the right type? thanks again

Yes, either one will fit, the lower unit is the only difference, uppers are the same. Did you see the link I added to my last post. It has some prices in it.
The DP drive is MUCH preferred, but at a price, The difference between the single prop and the Duoprop is wild, but wonderful.
Get some serial numbers if you buy it. We have manuals and a lot of other info available here.
With that serial number, I can tell you what engine drive, transom shield was installed in your boat originally.

Looks pretty original....so if the boat is a 99 it should of had a 98 or 99 year model drive. Not uncommon for boats to come out of the factory with year model older driveline.
The Serial numbers will tell the story.

Re: What Type of Outdrive on A 1999 Four Winns

Before you get too far into this project you might want to check the boat for wood rot in the deck, transom and engine mount stringers...it's old enough that it could have rot and fixing rot is a lot harder and time consuming than replacing engines or outdrives...I'd hate to see you put a nice re-done drive on it and find out that the engine mounts or transom have rot...so check that first...get someone who knows how to check fiberglass boats for rot to help you...and go over to the restoration forum and do some reading....I had to do a stringer repair and deck replacement on our '88 Four Winns and it's a job I'd never do again...

And you have to add the cost of a new trailer into this deal....that trailer in the pic is for a much smaller boat...

Unless they are giving this to you...and there is NO rot...I'd forget about it...
