I noticed the thread for the first outboard you've owned and decided to start this one.
Mine is a 1976 9.8hp Merc kicker. It has saved me countless times when my big engines failed and always starts on the first pull, even after I swam for it when it fell off the boat.
Eric

Let's see...first, a Johnson, then an Evinrude...then another Johnson.
Well, then I bought another Evinrude, but I still have a Johnson.

my 1965 5.5 and modern 1984 6 jonyrudes were great as were the classic 33 and 40 hp twins

and the 50HP jonyrude about 1985 twin was a great motor also

tommays

I think the Johnson CD series, it's relatives and descendants (anywhere from 5.5 to 8hp) are the outboards I have owned that I was most attached to. The JWs (3HP) would be a close second.

The one Suzuki DF70 was the most user friendly and satisfying outboard I ever owned.

Part of my love for the JohnnyRudes is because they were easy to work on, simple to troubleshoot but reliable and smooth little engines.

The one shortcoming of the Suzi was that Computerized EFI engines don't lend themselves to DIY maintenance.

The classic Merc 50 has been my favorite. I have a 1985 engine that I bought new in 86. It is now on its 4th or 5th boat (I've lost track).

My second favorite is a 1957 Johnson 7.5. It still runs like it is new.

Re: What was/is the best outboard you've owned

i have had heaps of outboards, but the best starting by far was a 1990ish 9.9 mercury that a got new and that was the easiest stating engine that I have ever owned, it would sit for a few months over winter and when I would dig it out, it would start first pull (usually the rope was only pulled a foot) it must have been just "one of those good motors" the guy I sold it to still has it and often gives me a 'dig" for selling such a great motor (I sold it to get a bigger HP, up to 20)

There is no doubt that the 44 cu. in. Mercury that started as a Mark 58 in 1958 and was built as a 500, 50, 45 and 40 hp thru the 1990s was and is the finest outboard ever built,--Bob

disagree---1967 3hp 'rude, it sat for 15 years.
i cleaned the carb, wiped the plugs off, and pulled the rope twice.
pull the rope once now
not much for speed, but it wont die.

"any" engine I have owned...seriously, they're all good and will all take care of you if you take care of them. The Merc guys love Merc and the OMC/Bombadier guys love Johnson/Evinrude. I have owned several of both and none let me down as I took very good care of them all.

Best running outboard I ever owned, and still do is a long shaft 1983, 35hp Johnson. Runs like a dream, and starts every time. Never had a wrench touch it.

But I can't beat my 9.9 Mariner, worlds best trolling motor.

Belchy

Two favorites: 1980 Evinrude 15 HP (sold it 3 years ago) and current 50 Evinrude e-tec tiller.

I've had several other brands but these have been the best.

Bill

1980 Johnson 30 hp and now a 1996 Evinrude 15. Had an 18 hp Merc which worked fine, but it was noisy and a real shaker at trolling speed.

By far the best is the 15 hp Evinrude! Super smooth troller, quiet, still carryable, fairly fast on a 14' tinny, and starts on a 6" pull!

Re: What was/is the best outboard you've owned

Very rarely have I gotten a "bad" motor. Most of the engines I get are ones that others have abused first, either through lack of maintenance (you mean you're supposed to change the impeller more than once every 20 years?), physical abuse (nahh, $12.00 is too much to spend on a chart!), or neglect (I had some leftover lawnmower oil that I mixed up good with the gas!).

If one is methodical about going through a motor, whether it be a rebuild of a blown motor, or a tune-up of an otherwise healthy motor, they tend run and stay running. I've had Mercs, Johnsons, Evinrudes, Scott-Atwaters, Champions, Yamatos, Eltos, Chris Crafts, etc. and they've all been good runners. I can name one one hand the number of engines I've ended up giving up on - engines that by all appearances "should" run, but for whatever reason wouldn't.

I guess my favorite motors (but not necessarily the "best") are these:
1952 Mercury KG7 - flat out flies on my 12-foot DuraNautic.
1980 Johnson Stinger 75 - The Energizer Bunny ain't got nothin' on this motor. It starts and runs as well as you could ever want a motor to run. Great on gas, too!
1967 Mercury 350 - One of the first motors I was ever really thorough with and it has rewarded me with almost 20 years of sporadic service. It's been my "loner" motor to island friends when they have motor issues and it has never let anyone down.
1954 Johnson CD-10 - Ugly as sin, but my 10-year old loves it.
1954 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 - the first motor my Dad and I ever rebuilt. I was 13. Got rebuilt again 20 years later after eating one of those aluminum connecting rods. One of my brothers had run it, forgetting to double up the oil for those babbit bearings...

Lots of others, but those are the biggies...

- Scott
