Hi guys, Well in the attempt to solve the problem I posted earlier about
(Low alternator output). I pulled the flywheel in order to replace the
stator. Since I had the wheel off, I decided to check the points. The points closest
to the carbs was open too far, so I cranked it back down to 0.01 per manual.
(A little voice was screaming "if ain't broke, don't touch it", but testosterone was
at a high, and I ignored it)

Reassemble, start motor. Runs rough, take out on lake, Peaks at about 3800 RPM.

I have no freakin' clue where it was gapped at before I pulled Flywheel and guessed
at it 3 times and once got it reasonable smooth and 4200 RPM (Was 5100 originally)

So how can I get this thing back running well? I have all the paper stuff I should need
in a Clymers and an original OEM service manual, but they either point to specialized
tools I don't have, or procedures that are not quite explicit enough for me to handle.

I assume I'll need to get a timing light for this one.

Could somebody spell out how to get me running again?

I got people coming over ostensibly to go boating next weekend and my
regular mech is booked solid for 2 weeks arrghh.

Oh, and swapping stator, flywheel, and rectifier didn't help. I'm eyeing the monkey
balls suspiciously at this point.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

mrc, one of the points will always be open farther than another dedending on which cylinder is getting ready to fire. If you rotate the crank while looking at the gap you will see it open and close. You were right, If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Been there and done that, Good luck, you'll get it right I'm sure.

Rich

Okay, found it this morning. While I had the distributer cap shoved out of the way in order
to access the points, I broke the #3 sparkplug wire inside the coupling to the distributer
cap. Thus was only running on 3 cylinders.

It still runs a bit rough at lower RPM's but wide open is back to "normal"

Since the basic timeing on these seems to be determined by the point gap and
the amplifier it appears that setting the timiing on these things is a royal pain.
It seems that one has to pull the flywheel, adjust the points, reattach the flywheel
and check in tank. True? Joe can you help here?

Seems like there should be an easier way? The flywheel has two sets of A and B markers
on it, with the "B" marker next to the 1969 V4 mark being the timing mark for Cylinder 1.

My hope would be that A-B would be the open range for one of the two sets of points.

Is my guess right?

Mike

Hi guys. My story is a copy cat of your . My friends 1970 johnson 85 hp electric shift stator
burned up. Rebuild the stator, change the rectifier, adjust the point to 0.010 inch according
to his manuel : Cant even start the motor anymore . Cant remenber the old setting!
Have a timing gun and it says way off adjustement . (30 degree off) . How can I fix that.
Micheal
