1966 6hp Johnson (Sea Horse?). Used it on a square stern Grumman canoe, then as a kicker on my first Boston Whaler. Wherever it is now I bet it's still running. That was the most reliable boat motor I've EVER had!

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

When I was about 8-9 years old in 93 or 94 (I'm 25 now), my father got a small 10' -11' fiberglass boat with a 1985 2 HP Evinrude and also a Minn Kota electric motor. We ran the Evinrude for 2 seasons then it was put in storage and used only the electric motor on a small lake and totally stop boating activities in the late 90's.

In 2008, I wan't to get a boat to go fishing, and I purchase a 14' Princecraft boat and I get a 1987 9,9 HP Honda 4 strokes for it. Ok for it but not fast enough.

Then, In 2009, I got a powerful 1976 20 HP Mercury and this is when boating and fishing became my favorite activity. Was able to change much faster fishing spots. But it didn't take long that the switchbox got defect so it got problematic and had to replace it.

After, since my father still had is 2 HP Evinrude, I worked to get it back in use after 12-13 years in storage in bad conditions. After a carb rebuilt, adjustment, spark plug and a new impeller, it worked like a brand new motor and he gave it to me and I used it for a trolling motor.

I sold that outboard unfortunally last June when I got a 4.5HP for my boat. The 2 HP was not good enough for a trolling motor on my boat.

These were my firsts outboards! My currents ones are in my signature.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

When I was young, my Dad had a 16' homemade boat with a '40ish motor sold by Western Auto . It was slow but dependable (about 3 hp). He later upgraded to a 5hp and we thought that we were flying, since a swimmer couldn't keep up with us. My first was a 25hp Johnson with elec. starter and no charging system ('50s model ). I wish that I had it now. I now have a '66 Chrysler 50hp which has given NO trouble except tune-ups every four or five years and three impeller changes. My latest motor is a '78 Evinrude 85hp which I acquired last year.

1989 85 HP Force. I still have it too.
After a bunch of pistons, stators, carb rebuilds athen a complete rebuild.
Had it 10 years this year
It runs really awsome. Its got a teeny miss at WOT but it goes.
If it was an airplane, I wouldnt get in it with that miss.
Talk about a trial by fire though!! That motor made a man (there is a man in MechANic) outta me.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

My first is a 1948 Scott-Atwater 3.6 h.p. My Dad bought it at a yard sale probably 35 years ago. I've cleaned and adjusted the points, cleaned the carb and replaced the impeller. It is in very good condition for 62 years old. :)

I had it running last summer with just fresh gas/oil mix; hadn't been started in 15 years. I'm going to repaint the cowlings and gas tank, and the leg. Pretty excited about getting it on my 12' Sea King this Spring.

1966 Evin. 3 (folding). Still own it.

I wouldn't part with either, at any price.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

The first outboard I owned personally was a mid 60s Johnson 40hp. The first motors that I operated on a regular basis (grandfather's) were a 5.5hp Johnson, a 7.5hp Evinrude and an 18hp Evinrude.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

The Christmas I'll never forget. I was 12 years old and when I went downstairs on Christmas morning, Mom and Dad said there was a terrible mistake and Santa hadn't left anything under the tree for me. By that age I had already figured out the Santa thing but how come my 2 brothers got neat presents and I didn't. They only let me pout for a minute then took me out to the back yard.

There it was. A brand new 12' Crestliner aluminum car topper with a 9HP McCulloch hanging on the back. I've still got the motor and it looks and runs like the day I got it. Sadly, I loaned the boat to a friend and he destroyed it.

I have the original sales agreement for the boat and motor. In 1968 the boat was $92 and the motor $270.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

1969 Johnson 9.9 for $300, the guy had it in a barel and ofered to start it for me, it fired right up and I had been looking for awhile so I grabbed it right away, he even offered to load it for me.

I found out why when I got home, there was a big hole in the lower, I jb welded it and used it for 3 years then sold it for $300, I have learned a few things since then.

My first was a early 50's Mercury Kiekhafer 5hp twin cyl, I currently run a 63' Johnson 18hp that runs great. My father had a 56' Johnson 25hp, a 62' Wizard 40hp, and a 66' 80hp Evinrude.

Late 60's or 70's Johnson 65 horse. I remember it had 3 cylinders and it was a great engine. I also had a 7.5 horse Sears Gamefisher as my trolling motor. I have no idea what year it was. I sure had some good times with that setup.

Re: What was the first outboard you owned?

my first engine was a 1968 johnson 55 HP - 3cylinder- short shaft on a 14 ft. aluminum starcraft boat. Yes, it was used and yes it was overpowered. Boat motor and trailer cost $750.00 in 1977. This engine had a set of points that would never hold the correct timing. It had a bad prop seals as well. When running it ran like a bat out of hell which wasn't very often.

1974 Evinrude 135, at the time didnt know a thing about outboards (still dont ha!), purchased it only based on the brilliant noise it made compared to the others I had looked at, got 3 or 4 years out of it before it ate itself.
