Mid 80's. Although my girls have already been in. Way too cold for me. In fact there were two other boats with kids getting in the water a couple of weeks ago.

I've heard some speculation about this over the years, but its hard to pin down an exact air temp/water temp curve.

For general purposes, I find the following will get you swimming around comfortably for at least 5-10 minutes:

Calculations are in degrees F.

Take (air temp) + (1.75 x water temp). This number must be over 200 in order to stay in comfortably for a little while. The more over 200 it is, the longer you'll be enjoying yourself. It seems to be pretty linear over the range of typically encountered water temps.

This is less accurate for little kids who seem to be able to swim around icebergs as long as they are having fun.

You will not be in the water long at 60 degrees, I'm guessing less than a minute before you're back on the boat. My kids will tube in any temperature water, and have several times already this year. Just have a towel waiting!.

No they were in and out in a flash. There were a couple of boys around 10 yrs old or so that kept jumping in and out but that didn't last to long either. I'ts really cold.

Maybe we are wimps down in S. Florida, but I am thinking at least 80. I like it cold and was in the water last weekend in FT Myers and it was cold. No one else in my group would get in the water.

At 60 degrees, no one will be comfortable. :(

It really isn't a question that can be answered with a yes/no. If some guy weighs 250lbs+ and is 6' tall, you an bet he can swim in just about anything over 50F. If you are a beanpole, you won't last long in 65F water. If you are really fit, you will last longer and than someone slightly flabby (more heat production), but someone fat will outlast Moby ****.

If you are floating around, you will get cold faster. If you are swimming laps, you will be okay for a while.

Water less than 60 degrees can take your breath away. I will get in then, but the worst part is when you get out and there is a breeze.

i agree, outside temperaturer plays a big factor also. the warmer it is outside the quicker you will dry off. which goes for the opposite as well.

if im out this weekend burning up then i may take a plunge into the water... ill judge it from there.

the water in the springs around here is 72 year round, so its about the same in Feb as it is in July, you just warm up faster in July :D

We have a bunch of nuts at our marina that have a polar bear club and they all go out to flamingo and jump in at the end of March. They ask me to join them every year and every year I say no thanks. I followed them out and watched the festivities this year.

Re: What water temperature do you get in at?

Growing up we had a swimming pool that had a thermometer. I would start using the pool when the water temperature got in the mid 70's. I don't have a way to measure the lake temperature, but I think I start doing watersports when the water feels like my pool did. The night time temperature seems to really impact the water temps. If the days are hot, but the nights are cool, the water stays cool. Once the nights start warming up I notice the water temps start to rise. Here in AZ I usually start doing watersports in late April (about 10 days from now) and I continue through late October. Since I primarily use my boat for watersports, I put my boat away for the winter just like the guys do in the cold weather parts of the country. Of course I don't have to worry about freeze damage, but I do a typical winterization, and my boat is packed away for the same amount of time as most cold weather boats.
